The benefits of natural jaggery
Indian kitchens have trusted gur for generations. Here is why — explained honestly, without exaggerated claims.
Unrefined & natural
Jaggery is simply cane juice boiled down. Unlike white sugar, it is not stripped of molasses, so it keeps the natural compounds of the cane.
Carries minerals
Gur contains small amounts of iron, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Food cooked in iron kadais can carry a little extra iron too.
The after-meal habit
Eating a small piece of gur after lunch or dinner is a long-standing Indian tradition, believed to aid digestion.
A winter staple
Til-gud, gur-chikki, gond laddoo and gur kadha — winter recipes across India rely on jaggery for warmth and energy.
Rich, deep flavour
Caramel and toffee notes that white sugar simply cannot give — which is why chefs and sweet-makers prefer it.
Traditional remedies
Ayurveda and home remedies pair gur with ginger, tulsi, ajwain or black pepper for throat and cold care.
Jaggery vs. white sugar
| Natural jaggery (gur) | Refined white sugar | |
|---|---|---|
| How it’s made | Cane juice boiled in an open kadai | Industrially refined, filtered and crystallised |
| Molasses | Retained | Removed |
| Minerals | Small amounts of iron, potassium, magnesium | Practically none |
| Colour | Golden to dark brown | White |
| Flavour | Caramel, earthy, complex | Plain sweet |
| Chemicals in our process | None | Often sulphur-based processing aids |
An honest note: jaggery is still a sugar and has similar calories to white sugar. It is a better, less-processed choice — not a medicine. People with diabetes should consult their doctor before using any sweetener, including gur. Enjoy it in moderation.
The benefits only exist if the gur is pure
Much of the jaggery sold today is whitened with sodium hydrosulphite (“hydros”) or coloured to look attractive. That defeats the whole reason for choosing gur.
- We never use hydros, sulphur or bleaching agents.
- We never add colour, sugar or chalk.
- Every batch is boiled slowly and recorded in our register.
